T-50 testing continues
The Sukhoi T-50 fifth-generation fighter made its first public appearance two years ago here at MAKS 2011, and is also present at this year’s air show. The flying phase of official testing should begin in the third quarter of 2013, according to Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief Lt-Gen Viktor Bondarev.
But the Air Force has already test-flown the T-50. A pilot with the Chkalov flight test center performed a two-hour flight from the airfield of the Gromov flight research institute in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, in April this year.
The first T-50 flying prototype took off in January 2010. Four prototypes are currently involved in the flight tests, with more than 200 flights performed to date. Two more airframes are being tested on the ground: one is being used for static tests, while the other serves as a simulator for testing various systems. Tests on the third flying prototype with a Tikhomirov AESA radar began in 2012. According to Sukhoi’s previous statements, a fifth prototype should join the flight testing program in the second half of 2013.
